1989...Teenager Yusef Hawkins is shot to death by a gang of whites in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The murder sets off days of racial tensions.
2011...The city's 911 lines are swamped with thousands more calls than usual as an earthquake -- whose epicenter was in Virigina -- is felt in the Big Apple. Some people decide to evacuate their buildings, but luckily there are no reports of major injuries or damage.
