1858...Work begins on Saint Patrick's Cathedral in a part of town then considered the boondocks. But when the cathedral is completed 21 years later, its Fifth Avenue address is in the middle of the city's most fashionable section.

1965...The Beatles perform at Shea Stadium in one of their last live concerts. The Fab Four play for only half an hour before 55,000 screaming fans, with the show grossing more than $300,000.

1969...New Yorkers flock to Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York, for the opening of the Woodstock Music Festival.
