1754...King's College is founded in Manhattan. It's later renamed Columbia.

1871...Political boss William Tweed offers the New York Times a $5 million bribe not to publish documents revealing corruption at City Hall. The newspaper does not accept the offer.

1946...Mother Frances Cabrini of Manhattan is canonized as the first American saint. A high school and a boulevard in Upper Manhattan are named after her.
