1776...In the middle of the American Revolutionary War, 10,000 British soldiers land on Staten Island in preparation for the invasion of New York. The Brits go on to capture New York City, but relinquish it at the end of the war in 1883.

1987...Broadway director and choreographer Michael Bennett dies of AIDS at age 44.

1993...In the aftermath of the first World Trade Center bombing, authorities in New York arrest accused radical Sheik Omar Abdul Rahman in connection with a plot to blow up several New York City landmarks. He is sentenced to life in prison in 1996.
