On this date in...

1971...Mayor John Lindsay, formerly a Repulican, announces that he will run for president as a Democrat in 1972. He becomes the first New York City mayor to formally seek the presidency, but loses the Democratic nomination to George McGovern.

1991...Nine people are killed in a crush to get into a benefit basketball game featuring rap artists at City College in Upper Manhattan. No criminal charges are brought in the aftermath of the incident.
