1965...John Lindsay is elected mayor on the Republican and Liberal tickets, beating Democrat Abe Beame in the closest election in a quarter century.

1993...In another tight race, Rudolph Giuliani squeaks by David Dinkins to become New York's first Republican mayor since Lindsay's election nearly three decades earlier.

2010...Andrew Cuomo handily defeats Republican Carl Paladino in the race for governor.
