1929..."Black Tuesday" hits Wall Street as the stock market collapses. Thousands lose their savings and the event signals the start of The Great Depression.

1967...The iconic musical "Hair" opens Off-Broadway at Joseph Papp's public theater.

1992...Lemrick Nelson, a black teenager, is acquitted of the murder of Jewish history student Yankel Rosenbaum during the Crown Heights riots, setting off protests by Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn. Nelson is later convicted of violating Rosenbaum's civil rights and serves nearly ten years in jail, eventually admitting that he did in fact stab Rosenbaum during the 1991 melee.

1996...Lower Manhattan is a sea of confetti and people as tens of thousands line the Canyon of Heroes to honor the World Champion Yankees.
