1977...The Concorde makes its maiden voyage to New York, arriving at JFK from France in under four hours. The flight had been delayed for months due to protests by Queens residents concerned about the supersonic noise.

1987...It's "Black Monday" on Wall Street as the Dow Jones plummets 508 points – its biggest one-day plunge to that point in history.

1995...The Metropolitan Transit Authority approves a fare hike of 25 cents, bringing the single-ride fare to $1.50.
