1934...Bruno Hauptmann, a carpenter from Brooklyn, is charged with the kidnap and murder of the baby of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh in what would become known as the crime of the century.
1960...Fidel Castro – in New York City to visit the United Nations – checks out of the Shelburne Hotel after a dispute with management. He moves to the Theresa Hotel in Harlem.
1977...U.S. Representative Ed Koch of Manhattan defeats New York Secretary of State Mario Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary en route to his first of three teams as mayor.
