The latest New Yorker of the Week is suiting up in Times Square for a good cause. NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report.
As part of The Call’s new hour-long format, New Yorkers of the Week will be invited to appear live on NY1.
Watch The Call every Friday from 9 – 10 p.m. for host John Schiumo’s exclusive interviews with your New Yorkers of the Week.
It’s not a sight you see every day—a woman walking through the streets of Times Square in goggles and a wetsuit—but it’s exactly how Miriam Weiskind plans to raise $5,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“Strangers are always willing to give, and it’s amazing to see how many people come up and bring me a dollar, and then you run into people who are cancer survivors,” says Weiskind.
Weiskind is asking New Yorkers to donate $1 to her cause. She is completing a triathlon in April as part of Team In Training, the world's largest endurance sports training program which benefits the society.
Weiskind's grandparents are her inspiration.
“They both passed away from lung cancer. They donated to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, so for me it was a way to honor their memory by doing something good for others,” says Weiskind.
She started raising money six years ago and estimates she's donated more than $13,000 to the cause. This year, she's already collected $300 in an outfit designed to get attention.
“You have to be able to tell somebody what you are doing in 10 seconds, so whether you make someone laugh by asking where the triathlon is or saying ‘hey, you come here, I know you have a dollar in that pocket,’ it think if you challenge the right people, others will come up and start donating too,” says Weiskind.
“The message that she is creating and the awareness she is creating and the unique way that she is doing it is really tremendous and makes a difference in the lives of so many people,” says Michelle Przypyszny, executive director of the New York chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Elizabeth Ellery, a tourist from England, was one of many who stopped to pose and donate.
“I think she is absolutely brilliant. It’s absolutely freezing cold out here. I give her 100 out of 100 for effort. She deserves every penny she gets,” says Ellery.
So for diving in head first for a good cause, Miriam Weiskind is the latest New Yorker of the week.
