In one Queens neighborhood, a group of residents say there's a trash situation that downright stinks. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following "NY1 For You" report. It's a junky, smelly mess and Elmhurst residents want it cleaned up.
"It's pretty nasty. It smells. In the summer, there's all kinds of animals going through the bags. It's just not pleasant at all," said Queens resident Terita Murphy. "I've called the city, the DEP, the buildings department. I have tried to contact the people who are listed as the owners of the building and I have never gotten any response from anyone."
All the while, Murphy has watched in disgust as the massive pile of trash, a year in the making, has grown out of hand.
"I have never really gone that close to look because I am afraid of what might jump out at me," said Murphy.
And it seems, Murphy had reason to be afraid. After she called "NY1 For You", we contacted the Department of Health and inspectors were sent to the site where they told us among the garbage pile, they found rat feces and a dead dog.
Inspectors removed the carcass and the property owner was issued an order to clean up the mess within five business days. A spokesperson for the Health Department says the agency will follow up with a compliance inspection and if the violations are not corrected the agency will clean up the property.
"I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it gets worst," said Murphy.
