Not all New Yorkers who are recovering from Hurricane Sandy can qualify for FEMA relief, but the federal government has a convenient online compilation of ways people can seek help. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report. Countless city families affected by Hurricane Sandy are finding they have been denied assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
So far, FEMA has approved more than $800 million in individual assistance grants for New York residents, but some find the available funds are not enough to cover the extensive costs of rebuilding.
In such cases, many are wondering who they can turn to for more help.
Roseann Finn, a viewer from Staten Island, writes NY1 in an email, "As so many of us want to apply for funds from charities after Sandy... I need to find out where to turn. I'm 80, no insurance money has been paid to me yet, FEMA was denied and I need to get funds from a charity fast, can you help me."
FEMA is guiding those who do not qualify for assistance to visit USA.gov for a list of helpful information about services available to Hurricane Sandy victims.
The web portal also lists alternative ways of getting help, including charities, and the latest updates on how government is working to expedite the recovery process.
FEMA officials say New Yorkers affected by the storm who have not applied for assistance need to do so immediately. The application deadline for Hurricane Sandy relief is January 28.
The deadline for registering for a loan with the U.S. Small Business Administration is also January 28. To register, visit disasterassistance.gov.
