Residents living in one Queens neighborhood who were fed up with a local business' smashed up sidewalk are back on even ground. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following "NY1 For You" report. From a muddy mess to a properly paved sidewalk. It's a smooth stroll now for those who live in one Far Rockaway neighborhood.
"Now it's clean. It looks really nice and it's convenient, you can walk about, ride your bike. It's wonderful," said Bart Daudelin.
But just three weeks ago that wasn't the case. NY1 told you how homeowners in the neighborhood were fed up with the sad excuse for a sidewalk along the property of Buster's Marine Service.
"It's all cracked up. It's really a big hazard," noted Caitlin Dooley.
"People taking their kids out to walk the dog, to play baseball, to go fishing. That gets a lot of foot traffic because it's right on the corner property of the main thoroughfare in town. We have to dodge traffic just to get to the corner and we found it to be unsafe and intolerable," Daudelin noted.
Neighbors told NY1 it had been in bad shape for the past four years and said their calls to 311 were useless.
NY1 called the owner of Buster's Marine Service and he told the station he was unaware his neighbors felt this way. After NY1's call, he immediately installed the new sidewalk.
"He did the right thing. I think there might have been a communication breakdown and it was wonderful that it worked out the way it did," Daudlin said.
