A fire hydrant that has leaked for more than a month has frustration flooding one Staten Island neighborhood. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report. Neighbors in the Rossville section of Staten Island say the broken fire hydrant on their street is a constant drain.
"It's been running nonstop for at least five to six weeks," says resident Gui D'Alessio.
"It's right in front of my house, so I constantly have water pooling right in front of my house," says resident Bill Lodato.
The broken hydrant has been flooding Woodrow Road running all the way down to Arthur Kill Road. Beyond the big mess, residents say it is just a huge waste of water.
"I can't imagine how many gallons a day are just running down the street," says D'Alessio.
Neighbors say they discovered the broken hydrant after city construction started on a water main on Woodrow Road. However, their pleas to the city Department of Environmental Protection to fix it have gone unanswered.
"I've called the DEP five times, I have yet to get a call," says D'Alessio.
NY1 called DEP, and a spokeswoman told the station that the construction in the area is part of a capital water main project and the hydrant in question is going to be replaced in the upcoming days.
However, in response to NY1's call, DEP officials have arranged to shut the hydrant gate to stop the leaking, hopefully allowing residents to finally dry off.
