NY1 For You: Unlit Footbridge Over LIRR Tracks Is Safety Concern In Rego Park

A pitch-dark footbridge has some commuters in Rego Park, Queens fearing for their safety. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.It is a descent into darkness for commuters walking through an unlit footbridge over the Long Island Rail Road in Rego Park.
"When it's a dark night, you cannot see a thing on this bridge. It is complete blackness," says resident Joe Austin.
Pedestrians say the lights on the bridge have been out for almost a month.
There are three lights above the footbridge and they are all out. If that doesn't make it dark enough, the street lamp coming right off the footbridge is out as well.
"Bottom line, it's a public safety issue. You have elderly, you have children coming through here, you also have guys whizzing in and out [on bicycles] who are delivering food and those guys can't see the people coming and vice versa. So it's kind of chaos," says resident Mark Redlefsen.
"People holding on, falling over each other, it's just very dangerous," says resident Lili Friedman.
"This is extremely dangerous. I thought by now it would have been fixed," says resident Ann Morales.
Residents say they have called 311 repeatedly to no effect. After they contacted NY1 For You, the station called the Department of Transportation.
After looking into the matter, a spokeswoman said DOT and Consolidated Edison are currently working together to resolve the issue.
