An out-of-the ordinary Con Ed bill left one Bronx couple confused and alarmed until they reached out to NY1. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following "NY1 For You" report.

Bronx homeowners Robert Estren and Ruth Riviere were shocked when they received a gas and electric bill from Consolidated Edison for $18,000.

"We freaked out. We assumed there must have been some kind of mistake," Estren said.

Two weeks ago, NY1 reported how the Bronx couple did a double take when they received a bill for almost $20,000 instead of their normal monthly charge of $400.

"We have had no change in our habits, we didn't put in a new dishwasher, we haven't changed our heating or washing or showering habits," Estren said.

The couple contacted Con Edison to look into the matter. Con Ed came back out to do another meter reading but there was no change.

"To actually generate such a bill almost $20,000 and not question it themselves is shocking," Riviere said.

NY1 called Con Ed and after some back and forth a spokesman admitted there was a problem with the reading. Another reading was scheduled and so far Con Ed has dropped the bill from $18,000 to a little over $4,000.

The Con Ed spokesman told NY1 the final amount is still being determined because there was a new meter installed and Con Ed is waiting on test results on that meter to make sure the customer is being billed property.

NY1 will continue to follow the story.
