NY1 For You: Post Office Access Troubles Escalate For Pregnant Mother

A trip to a Manhattan post office has one mother asking for a special delivery. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

Using the local post office poses a serious challenge to pregnant mother Jennifer Curry of Midtown East.

"The only way you can access the full service windows is by using the escalators," says Curry.

With a toddler in a stroller, that is not a great option for Curry, who is seven months pregnant.

"They say to just leave your stroller downstairs and when I ask them if they would be responsible or if somebody could watch it while I went upstairs they said, 'No,'" says Curry.

Curry says the staff at the FDR Post Office on 53rd Street and Third Avenue refuses to let her use the elevator, saying it is only for the disabled.

"I have to get a babysitter to use my post office, I just don't think that's fair. It's a public institution and I think it should be made available to everybody," says Curry.

After Curry called NY1, the station contacted the U.S. Postal Service. A spokeswoman told NY1 the agency regrets any inconvenience Curry experienced. She said there are five self-service kiosks available on the ground floor that provide about 85 percent of all postal services.

However, for full service, on the second floor, the spokeswoman admitted the redirection of customers to the elevator at 54th Street has been spotty in recent years.

She went on to say as a result of NY1's call, the post office is improving access to the elevator and will have a postal employee accompany customers to the elevator.

It is an improvement Curry hopes will make future trips to the post office more of an express delivery.
