Some Harlem residents have been without gas since August, but officials say the problem could be fixed in a few weeks after several calls from NY1 For You. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

It's been a daily struggle for tenants at 772 Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. They’ve been without gas ever since last summer, when a water main broke in their neighborhood.

“It's stressful. I go back and forth to the Bronx to make meals for my son at my best friend’s house,” says tenant Jamora Allen.

“I have a envelope full of receipts from restaurants. That's what it's been like,” says tenant Tracy Holmes.

The outage has led to a financial and physical strain on residents. NY1 first reported on their situation back in October. At the time, management of the building, Evita Realty Corp., told NY1 that plumbers had been on-site daily to work on the problem.

Officials at the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development told NY1 the department’s emergency repair staff was monitoring the issue and that it appeared that the owner was making repairs.

That was until the holidays, when all work stopped.

“The holiday coming up, what are we going to do? What are we going to do?” said tenant Zonya Bucknor.

NY1 called Evita Realty, and a manager said the Department of Buildings denied the building's application due to an unrelated stop work order.

NY1 then called the DOB.

Evita Management said the stop work order was finally lifted after the call to DOB, and now they’ve finally resumed the plumbing work to restore gas to the building.

The manager said he believes it will take approximately three weeks to restore gas to the entire building depending on the tenants’ cooperation in giving access to their apartments.

“I really want to thank NY1, I really do. I really want to thank you guys for sticking with us as long as you did,” says Holmes.

NY1 will continue to follow this story.
