Last week, NY1 for You shed some light on an area of Bay Ridge for which nighttime was darker than most other areas of the city. Now, NY1's Susan Jhun is helping the neighborhood find its way by working to restore missing street signs at several major intersections.A week ago, the only thing identifying the intersection of 86th Street and Third Avenue was a bus stop. For six months, this and two other intersections on 86th Street lacked identifying street signs.
Bay Ridge resident Sidney Levine said those missing signs, along with over 20 broken streetlamps, created a dangerous situation.
"Especially for people who have a hard time seeing at night or problems with their vision," said Levine.
NY1 called the City Department of Design and Construction and a spokesperson told the station that the agency was performing a full-scale overhaul of 86th Street. After NY1's call, the agency restored power to the darkened streetlamps and, shortly after the story aired, the Department of Transportation replaced the missing street signs.
Levine says these changes make the neighborhood safer for drivers and pedestrians.
"I think the road is safer," he said. "I think people are more aware of where they are."
Levine's greatest peace of mind, though, comes from knowing that he had somewhere to turn for help.
"When people say things cannot be done, I think we proved that you can get things done with the help of NY1," he said.
