Have you ever wondered what happens to your car after you park it in a garage? Well, one Bronx woman says if you're a Yankee fan, you may be breaking the law without knowing it if you park at one local garage. NY1 Susan Jhun filed the following report. It's a sight that's unquestionably illegal, but one that Bronx resident Susan Donovan says is constant during Yankee games.
“When I come down the street on game days, I've noticed that frequently there are cars parked on the sidewalk and also parked next to the fire hydrant on the sidewalk sometimes blocking it on both sides,” says Donovan.
It’s not just random game-goers double parking, but attendants for East Parking Garage who are putting cars which pay to park in the garage on the street, blocking the hydrant. It’s something that worries Donovan who lives just up the street.
“If there's a fire with a lot of cars parked by the hydrant like that, particularly when they're parking on both sides, it would slow down the firemen,” says Donovan.
Donovan says the cars completely block the sidewalk to the point where she has to come out into the middle of the street to get by.
“They block [the sidewalk] in such a way that you can't even squeeze by at all,” says Donovan. “The sidewalks really are for people to walk on and not for parking.”
When we spoke to a manager for East Parking Garage, he said that they only put the cars there temporarily and move them constantly.
But that's not what NY1 cameras caught on a recent game day when cars sat parked in front of the hydrant.
Donovan says she's called both the Fire Department and 311, but on game days the cars are still there.
“I've asked police ticketing cars in the area to come and take a look at it and they're really indifferent to it,” says Donovan.
NY1 called the NYPD and a spokesman said they don't have any complaints on record. NY1 also called the FDNY and a spokesman said the agency doesn't have any complaints on record either, but he did say the agency will be monitoring the site from now on.
