1946...Mayor William O'Dwyer orders all businesses and schools to close because of a prolonged tugboat strike. The strike prevents many items from entering the harbor, especially heating fuel. A settlement is reached two days later.
1993...A gunman hijacks a Luftansa jet and orders it to land at Kennedy Airport, where he quickly surrenders. No one is hurt.
