At sunset, the view of Brighton Beach should be beautiful. But some say that at the end of the day, the view is blemished by trash all over the beach. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

The city Parks Department has implemented a new policy which calls for trash cans to be bundled together. Some say the new system is unintentionally encouraging littering.

"It's making the beach dirtier than it used to be," says one beachgoer.

That's because the cans are usually too far away from where people like to settle down on the sand.

"Leaving the beach they're supposed to put the trash in the cans, which are close to the boardwalk but far away from where they are sitting," the beachgoer said. "The sand is very hot and most people are not going to want start trekking across the sand just to put garbage in a can."

Locals say there are plenty of trash cans, they're just not in the right places.

Cans used to be spread out down by the water where people sit. Now they're way back by the boardwalk.

NY1 called the Parks Department and a spokeswoman said in previous summers, the agency placed about 1,500 baskets all over Coney Island & Brighton Beach.

She said with the new system, by placing clusters of baskets at each of the beach entrances and exits, their tractors are able to more effectively and safely move in straight lines during the nightly cleaning.

The spokeswoman also said visitors to the beach should help keep it clean by pitching their garbage in the cans.

"People should bring plastic bags out in their blankets and after they finish drinking something throw it inside the bag," said one man on the boardwalk.

By the looks of the beach, it seems doubtful that beachgoers will take matters into their own hands anytime soon.
