The latest New Yorker of the Week is helping to find homes for a little known population. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.A rabbit lover since she was a child and an owner of six today, Cindi Stutts started volunteering with Rabbit Rescue and Rehab when she first moved to New York 15 years ago.
"Rabbits make great companion animals especially here in New York City they are like cats in that they use litter boxes, they groom themselves so you don't have to bathe them and they are quiet. And most importantly you don't have to walk them, and they can be incredibly affectionate like a dog."
"She is like the bunny lady of New York City and she's helped save and rescue a lot of bunnies," said bunny owner Abigail Aldridge.
Until Stutts came along, animal care and control on East 110th Street had to euthanize rabbits. Now, thanks to her efforts, none are being killed and she's found homes for more than 3,600.
Stutts screens all the potential adoptees herself to make sure they're offering loving homes.
"Cindi makes sure there are support services after, so after somebody adopts there is follow up, making sure everything is going well," said Animal Care and Control Director of Administrative Services Richard Gentles.
Cindi and her 30 volunteers take care of the bunnies seven days a week. They even provide major medical care. The group relies on donations and fundraisers to cover costs.
"I would like to see less rabbits coming into the shelter because people educate themselves prior to coming not just going to a pet store and buying a bunny," Stutts said.
This past October, Stutts partnered with Petco and now keeps rabbits ready for adoption at its Upper East Side and Union Square locations.
"She has made a lot of people happy by helping with the adoptions and bringing the rabbits and the people together and she is dedicated to this all on a volunteer basis," Aldridge said.
So for hopping to it while others might turn tail, Cindi Stutts is the latest New Yorker of the Week.
