Some parents in the Bronx say a dangerous crossing near their kids’ school is putting their children in harm's way. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 for You report.

“Somebody should do something about it because somebody's going to get hurt,” said parent Gyana Arias.

Arias is just one of many parents of P.S. 8 students who say they are worried about an intersection near the Bronx school where countless drivers make illegal left turns every day.

“It's very dangerous. You could get hit and somebody could get really hurt,” said concerned parent Shashanda Williams. “There are a lot of kids around here going to school.”

“I've walked down just to pick my son up and I've had to stop and get the attention of cars because they're not paying attention,” said Jeneen Jackson, another concerned parent.

Parents say day after day, hour after hour, drivers repeatedly make illegal left turns from Briggs Avenue onto East Mosholu Parkway to loop around to East 203rd Street.

The intersection, which has a stop sign, is clearly marked one way, with arrows directing traffic one way; however, as NY1 witnessed again and again and again, the sign does not stop cars from blatantly making the illegal left.

Parents say if no agency is willing to enforce these signs, there should at least be a crossing guard at the corner to protect their children.

“There should be somebody out here, as far as possibly police or crossing guards or somebody like that,” said Jackson. “Because you see the traffic, it's high traffic out here, a lot of them go home alone they're not supervised.”

NY1 called the New York City Police Department and was told the local precinct is aware of the problem, the area is being monitored, and 20 summons have been issued at this location in the past 60 days. After the station’s call, the NYPD said it would place a police car at the location during the hours kids come and go to school.

NY1 has also asked if they would assign a crossing guard and the station is still awaiting a response.

Moreover, the station called the Department of Transportation, and while the agency said appropriate signage appears to be in place, it will look into whether any additional steps can be taken to improve safety at this intersection.

Parents say they pray these steps will make a difference.
