The penthouse belonging to convicted swindler Bernard Madoff is now in the hands of federal authorities.

It was seized on Thursday and will be sold, along with its contents, to help pay back investors who lost billions in Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

A federal official told the Associated Press that the former investor's wife Ruth Madoff tried to leave the premises with a fur coat. When she was told she couldn't take it, she left carrying just a straw bag.

Ruth Madoff had agreed to give up all her real estate and possessions except for $2.5 million.

Bernard Madoff was sentenced earlier this week to 150-years behind bars for running one of the largest investment frauds in history.
