Brooklyn native Dr. Frank Macchiarola will be installed into the Holy Order of St. Gregory the Great for his service to the city and the Church by Pope Benedict XVI.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio describes Macchiarola as an "admirable Catholic" and a major figure in the education of the city's children.
Macchiarola is chancellor of Saint Francis College. He served as New York City's schools chancellor from 1978 to 1983.
Mayor Bloomberg also appointed him to serve as chair of the city's charter revision commission in 2003.
Macchiarolla will be installed at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James on Sunday.
