NY1 VIDEO: Parents in Queens are speaking out against the Department of Education's 10-year approach to removing PCBs in the city's schools.
They want the D-O-E to immediately replace a light fixture at IS 204 found to be dripping the toxic chemical on Sept. 10.
The DOE previously did emergency repairs at PS 41 on Staten Island, where the chemical fell on a fifth-grader just four days earlier.
Parents and elected officials say the delay could be making children sick.
"We are here to tell the Department of Education and the mayor that waiting 10 years to make our schools safe is not acceptable," said City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.
"Our children are being exposed to this PCB substance being leaked from the lights that they sit under while they are getting educated," said parent Nancy Nizza.
The education department says it will immediately survey the Queens school and begin to order new fixtures but officials say it could take up to two months to replace the light.
