The Department of Education has pulled five tutoring companies from a major contract to be voted on by Panel for Educational Policy later today.

The companies were set to be awarded nearly $36 million in new deals, but education officials say they had some concerns after doing background checks.

The DOE says one vendor, Episcopal Social Services, failed to fingerprint workers even after being reprimanded.

Another vendor, Champion Learning Center, needed to pay back $6 million after reports found the vendor overcharged the department.

The five vendors could still be approved in future PEP meetings.
