Clint Eastwood has opened up about his Republican convention speech that made the political world's day.

In his first interview since last week's appearance in Tampa, Eastwood tells his hometown newspaper, the Carmel Pine Cone, that he decided to use an empty chair as a prop after someone backstage asked him if he wanted to sit down.

Eastwood's conversation with an imaginary President Obama set the blogosphere on fire and opened up the actor to criticism.

But Eastwood said he made his points that the president has broken his promises and that not everyone in Hollywood is from the political left.

He called Obama "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."

He also said nominees Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan thanked him backstage.
