A man was in a Staten Island hospital and facing multiple charges Sunday, a day after police say he led them on a car chase on Staten Island on Saturday.

Police say two detectives and an officer from the Staten Island Gang Squad tried to pull over a Toyota Camry in the Castleton Corners area on Saturday, believing the driver had a gun.

When the detectives approached the car, police say Clinton James, 33, tried to speed off, pinning one of the officers between the Camry and another car.

Police say James was then seen reaching for a gun, and one of the officers then shot James in the torso.

The wounded suspect still drove off, hitting several cars and crashing into a utility pole.

Police say James then tried to run, but was quickly caught. He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition.

A loaded .44 caliber revolver was found in James' car.

James' charges were expected to include weapons possession, reckless endangerment and assault on a police officer.

Authorities say James has an extensive record that includes arrests for armed robbery and weapons possession.

The police officers who approached the car initially were also hospitalized with minor injuries.
