Kelly Touts Sandy Response, Low Homicide Rate In "State Of The NYPD"

The response to Hurricane Sandy and a low homicide rate highlight Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's State of the NYPD speech.
Speaking at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Kelly applauded the officers who overcame numerous hurdles to help keep New Yorkers safe after the storm.
"It’s a credit to their efforts that overall crime fell in the weeks after the hurricane by nearly seven percent compared to the prior year,' said Kelly. "It’s also worth noting that there were no homicides in New York City for an entire week after the storm. The city was already on pace to see a record low in murders in 2012. And as I said, we ended the year with the fewest homicides in more than half a century."
Kelly also focused on technology, including how the department is using its network of security cameras to fight crime.
For example, the system can automatically recognize potential problems like an unattended bag or a car driving against the flow of traffic, and send an alert to officers.
