Although the city is not making any changes to school safety following last week's school shooting in Connecticut, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the NYPD's school safety agents are already trained to react to a similar situation.

Every school in the five boroughs has at least one unarmed school safety agent assigned to it.

However, in the event of a shooting, the commissioner says they are instructed to focus on first aid and crisis management and are not expected to confront an armed gunman.

"We want them to focus on the safety of the students and the teachers. So that's what their training as far as active shooter situations are involved," Kelly told reporters Tuesday. "That's what they're focused on, first aid, bringing people to safety."

There are also 350 armed police officers assigned to circulate through the city's schools.

Certain schools also have metal detectors.
