Former Police Detective Convicted In Death Of Bronx Grandmother

An off-duty police detective accused of running over a Bronx grandmother while he was drunk three years ago was found guilty Thursday.
Kevin Spellman, a 22 year veteran on the police force, was convicted of manslaughter in the second degree Thursday for killing 66-year-old Drana Nikac.
Prosecutors said Spellman had a blood alcohol level two and a half times above the legal limit at the time of the incident.
His lawyer said he's disappointed with the verdict and that his client just wants to make amends.
"From the very beginning it's been his stated motivation to talk to the family," Spellman's attorney Peter Brill said. "Unfortunately because there was a trial going on he didn't have that opportunity. But, he has been asking to apologize."
The case drew criticism because Spellman refused a breathalyzer test both at the scene and at the police precinct. It took cops more than five hours to draw his blood.
He'll be sentenced in February and faces 15 years behind bars.
