By Tuesday, Staten Island officials confirmed at least five deaths in the borough in connection with Monday's storm, including an off-duty NYPD officer who was rescuing his family from water flooding into his South Beach house.

Police say off-duty Officer Artur Kasprzak, 28, who was assigned to the 1st Precinct in Manhattan, got six members of his family — two men aged 69 and 31, three women aged 68, 31 and 30, and a 15-month-old baby boy — into his attic to escape the rising waters around 7 p.m. Monday.

Kasprzak was last seen telling family members he would check the basement, according to authorities.

Police immediately went to Kasprzak's house immediately after he was reported missing, but they could not enter the house as there were downed electrical wires in the nearby water, according to the NYPD.

Officers entered the house around 7 a.m. Tuesday, once it was safe to enter, and found Kasprzak's body in the basement.

By Tuesday night the city medical examiner was still determining the cause of Kasprzak's death.

Kasprzak served for six years in the 1st precinct and one year before that as a cadet in the 122nd Precinct detective squad on Staten Island.

Investigators also say officers were searching a home located on Fox Beach Avenue Tuesday when they came across the bodies of a 51-year-old man and his 20-year-old son. Their identities were not immediately available.

By late Tuesday, no details on the other deaths in Staten Island were available.
