A prominent New York attorney has been appointed to oversee the September 11th health fund.

The U.S. Justice Department selected Sheila Birnbaum as the fund's "special master."

The $2.7 billion fund, reactivated under the recently passed Zadroga Law, provides health care for September 11th first responders who have fallen ill due to their work at the World Trade Center site.

Birnbaum previously mediated lawsuits filed by families of September 11th victims, which led to a $500 million payout for 92 families.

In a statement, the native New Yorker said she is focused on setting up a transparent way for first responders to interact with the fund, which is expected to become fully operational in October.
