Former President Bill Clinton talked about the 9/11 attacks on the eve of the seventh anniversary, sparking harsh opinions from some in his Lower Manhattan audience.

Clinton was talking about the anniversary in Downtown Manhattan Wednesday when Diane Horning, a New Jersey woman in the audience who lost her son in the attacks, began to voice her opinion about the Fresh Kills landfill.

Relatives of the victims say the site contains numerous human remains adjacent to buried garbage.

"Excavate that site and take that to a place that has never held garbage,” said Horning. “Then I would like them to turn that into a cemetery, an international cemetery that honors the people from all 92 nations killed that day. A place like Normandy.”

"A lot of these problems that have developed, I didn’t know anything about before they developed, and I have been unsuccessful in resolving most of them,” said Clinton. “But I am determined to redouble my efforts. I just don’t know enough about them, and but I am going to make sure I learn more about it and see what the facts are."

A spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined to comment on the landfill.

A Manhattan federal judge recently dismissed a request from families to sift through debris at Fresh Kills.
