The Tribute in Light faded into the daylight as the sun rose over New York City Sunday morning, bringing to an end the third anniversary of the worst terror attack on U.S soil.

The twin beams, illuminated Saturday night in memory of those lost in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, were visible from throughout the city.

The soaring tribute was first lit on the six-month anniversary of the towers' destruction, when they stayed on for 32 nights. They will shine each year on September 11.

At the World Trade Center site yesterday, the city marked the third anniversary with a somber ceremony. Parents and grandparents of those killed read the names of the 2,749 victims.

Moments of silence were observed at 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., the times that the two hijacked planes struck the Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001, and again at 9:59 and 10:29 a.m., the times that each of the towers collapsed.

Family members of the victims then walked down into the site's excavated pit and placed flowers in two reflecting pools representing the towers' footprints.

Throughout the day, police officers, firefighters, and other members of the city's uniformed services participated in additional remembrances across the city.

At St. Peter's Church, mourners gathered to pay tribute to the Port Authority workers who were killed in the attacks.

On Staten Island, a memorial to that borough's victims was dedicated Saturday evening in a ceremony involving Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
