Twin Towers Were One Of The World's Most Recognized Landmarks

Tuesday's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has changed the very face of New York City.

While the city's skyline is constantly evolving, the twin towers of the World Trade Center towered above the rest. The New York City landmark standing at the center was the world's largest commercial complex, a major tourist attraction and an internationally-recognized symbol of the United States' financial strength.

The towering skyscrapers were immortalized in innumerable New York City posters and postcards - all of which have been rendered obsolete by Tuesday's attack.

Completed in 1973, the two 110-story skyscrapers were flanked by five smaller buildings. At the time of their opening, the twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world.

At the time of the attacks, the twin skyscrapers were the world's fifth and sixth tallest.

Approximately 54,000 people work in the seven-building complex, and everyday an average of 150,000 people pass through the buildings and their underground concourse, which houses more than 60 stores.

The towers housed several hundred businesses from 26 countries.

The twin towers were also home to the legendary "Windows On The World" restaurant, and the observation deck on the tower's 107th floor afforded visitors an unparalleled panoramic view of the city.

However, the World Trade Center's stature also made it a target for anti-American sentiment. Tuesday's attack came eight years after the complex was attacked by terrorists in a bombing that killed six people and injured more than 1,000 others.

The bombing, on February 26, 1993, was accomplished by an explosive device stored in a van in the parking area next to the towers. The resulting blast produced a crater approximately 150 feet in diameter and five floors deep, but the explosion did minimal damage to the towers themselves.
