It was a rainbow of colors Sunday afternoon as the 36th annual Gay Pride Parade made its way down Manhattan's Fifth Avenue.
The festivities weaved their way downtown to Christopher and Greenwich streets in the West Village. Thousands lined the streets to join in the celebration.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg was among the politicians in attendance.
"The gay pride parade is a chance for lots of New Yorkers to express themselves, and for lots of people on the sideline to have fun," Bloomberg told the crowd. "It's a wonderful parade."
"I am gay, and I am proud to be gay," said parade-goer Luis Bac. "I enjoy the parade every year."
"If you don't come and participate, it doesn't show the unity and the amount of gay people that are present in the United States alone, helping to help the economy and everything else," said parade-goer Sue Widmer. "We're everywhere."
This year's grand marshals were best-selling author Andrew Tobias and transgender activist Pauline Park.
The festivities included a moment of silence to remember lives lost to AIDS.
