Talk show host David Letterman underwent emergency quintuple bypass surgery Friday.

The 52-year old host of "The Late Show" announced Thursday night that he was going into the hospital today for an angiogram. That's when doctors made the decision to go ahead with the bypass surgery immediately.

Letterman told his audience he was having the angiogram because he has high cholesterol and a family history of heart trouble.

Doctors say the procedure was successful, and that Letterman should make a full and rapid recovery. "The Late Show" will air repeats while Letterman recovers.
