Amtrak says it's working to get the Long Island Rail Road back to full service in time for the Christmas rush.
Sandy flooded two of the four tunnels under the East River that the LIRR uses to get travelers to Penn Station.
Amtrak owns and maintains the tunnels. It originally estimated the repairs wouldn't be finished until mid-January.
The damage caused delays and crowded trains.
Until the repairs are completed, the LIRR can only run about 70 percent of its rush hour trains.
