City Council Speaker Christine Quinn became the newest supporter of a plan that would re-energize a Queens power plant.
Quinn joined the Smart Power New York Coalition Friday. The group is a strong supporter of the Astoria Repowering Project, which would upgrade the Queens plant with more environmentally-friendly equipment.
"The Astoria Repowering Project has the potential to help every resident of the city of New York," Quinn said. "It will help improve air quality in all five boroughs. while creating efficient and more reliable sources of energy."
Supporters of the project say it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1 million tons a year and would create 500 temporary construction jobs.
