Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Parks and Sanitation commissioners got the 16th annual MulchFest started Friday by buzzing some Christmas trees and wreaths.
New Yorkers will be able to bring their greens to 70 collection sites across the city this weekend.
The mulch is used around the city's parks.
Those who donate their trees can also bring a bag of mulch home.
"It really is a great way to start the year on a more sustainable basis and build a greater, greener city," said Bloomberg.
Last year, 17,000 trees were given a second lease on life.
