Police took down a Halloween scarecrow in Brooklyn Wednesday after some called it racist.

This scarecrow was seen hanging on East Fifth Street in Kensington.

It sparked a protest from community leaders, who say it depicts a black man being lynched, but neighbors say it's been on display the past six Halloweens without being an issue.

"Children have to come by and see someone hanging. This is not funny, this is not a joke. This is not a trick or a treat," said City Councilmember Charles Barron.

"I don't think that that portrays lynching. I mean, it's Halloween, that's part of the Halloween spirit. When I see a jack-o-lantern with a scary face on, I don't get scared and think monsters are going to come get me,” said neighbor Nicole Clemente.

Police could not locate the owner of the house, but they took down the scarecrow anyway since the tree is considered city property.
