The Groundswell Community Mural Project unveiled a new work of art in Brooklyn Thursday.
The mural on East Fifth Street in Kensington is called "React, Respect, Intersect."
It's designed to promote traffic safety near a dangerous intersection.
"We worked with the Department of Transportation and their Safety Education Department who helped us by giving us more insight into the possible crashes or accidents that have happened in this neighborhood, and we geared our design towards fixing that," said lead artist Yana Dimitrova.
"The message is, whether you're walking, biking, driving, or taking transit, to be smart and to make safe choices," says Michelle Kaucic of the Department of Transportation.
"All the young people we work with, 85 to 100 young people every summer, they all get paid. This is their summer job. Part of what they're learning are the job skills necessary to create a piece of public art,” said Amy Sananman of the Groundswell Community Mural Project.
Many of those who worked on the project were volunteers.
