A new garden was opened Monday at the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn.
Girls at the school will get their hands dirty while learning about ecology, environmentalism and sustainability.
The garden is sponsored by NY1's parent company, Time Warner Cable.
"What's special about this garden is that it's teaching the students actual skills around physics, biology,” said Bobby Amirshahi, vice president of Time Warner Cable. “They even have an Italian class here, harvesting some of the food for their culture classes.”
“They're going to be looking at how rainwater is collected, looking at some of the pressing problems we take today and trying to come up with some innovative solutions,” said Yvonne Graham, deputy borough president of Brooklyn. “So we're absolutely excited. And we want those solutions to come from Brooklyn."
Students will also learn about nutrition and local produce as they focus on battling the growing problem of childhood obesity.
