Women's Substance Abuse Facility Opens In East Harlem

A new substance abuse facility to help women get back on their feet opened its doors in East Harlem Thursday.
In addition to the traditional alcohol and drug treatment programs, the Kandake House provides yoga, gardening, and cooking classes for women just out of prison.
The eight-story building is run by the Greenhope Services for Women.
"We just basically provide all the services that a woman would need to really get her life back together," said Dr. Anne Elliott of Greenhope Services for Women.
"We're cutting the ribbon on what we know is a tremendous facility and a tremendous program that has been able to provide direction for these women, and give them a life after prison," said Manhattan Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez. "And they do such a good job that only 10 percent of the women who participate in the program actually go back to jail."
The Kandake House receives funding from the city, state and federal governments.
