Edible: New How-To Book On Brewing Beer At Home

Edible Magazine’s Rachel Wharton recently had a chance to talk to the creators of “Beer Craft,” a new book about brewing your own beer at home.

"Beer Craft" is a collaboration from Jessi Rymill, a designer, and William Bostwick, a freelance writer. The couple started brewing a few years back, but soon realized most recipes weren’t so easy to follow.

“We made this batch and it kinda went bad, and it exploded all over our apartment and that kinda made us realize there like has to be a different way to do this, a better way. So we basically started writing down our own recipes and writing down our instructions. And I guess at a certain point we just realized other people would probably like this, so we should make a book,” says Bostwick.

They also realized that if they put Rymill's illustration skills to work, the book would be even better.

“As a visual learner, learning from 'How to Brew' books, which are kinda like appliance manuals, like 500-page black and white, maybe like a low-res photo of a guy and his socks and his kitchen like pouring beer into something, and I thought, wouldn't it be better if there was, you know, an illustration of how something like that might work that's labeled so you can refer back to it and actually like see what’s going on, and it would be much clearer,” says Rymill.

Together they they've created an illustrated guide to making homebrew, with recipes that use whole grains instead of extracts and syrups and yield smaller, one-gallon batches that are easier for New Yorkers to use. They also added their own stylish twist: a chapter on creating your own labels.

“For this beer it’s like, it’s a New York-themed imperial wit. So I made a bottle with some, like, abstracted wheat, and, you know, Chrysler Building design, so that when someone gets the beer that we made they'll know that it’s a special thing for them,” says Rymill.
