Alexis Wolfer says she struggled with an eating disorder in college.

"I just realized that there was this huge problem and a lot of it I think comes from very unrealistic beauty ideals and we are all struggling to strive and meet them," Wolfer said.

So after she graduated, Wolfer started The Beauty Bean, an online magazine that focuses on what she calls real beauty. Recently, Wolfer held a workshop at the Lower East Side Girls Club where she spoke about the importance of having a positive self image.

"It was really inspiring and it was just amazing. Not a lot of people say that and will have the courage," said Club Member Apolonia Euvin.

With prom season just around the corner Wolfer is holding an eco-friendly makeup drive to coincide with the club's dress drive. She says she wants girls to feel confident and enjoy their prom.

"I think it's a teenagers red carpet moment," Wolfer said.

Wolfer has donated over a thousand pieces of makeup and skin care products to the club and other groups that help women like Dress for Success. That way the girls can save their money and put it to a more important use, like a college fund.

"With the money saved over I have been putting it into my account," Euvin said.

Alsenio Espinal is an aspiring make up artist and one of only two boys in the Girls Club. He says Wolfer has helped him start his career.

"She actually donated a starter makeup kit to my kit so I have been using that. So I am very thankful," Espinal said.

As prom season ends and the summer begins, Wolfer says she will continue to donate sunscreen and skincare products to the girls to help them maintain their natural beauty.

"I look up to women who pass on that positive message of real beauty," said Club Member Cristine Sanchez.

So, for being a real role model for girls, Alexis Wolfer is the latest New Yorker of the Week.
