A new program is launched to boost business for minorities and women in the construction industry.

The New York Association of Hispanics in Real Estate and Construction is helping to finance labor costs for these companies.

The program, called "Operation Construction Force," will also provide training for workers.

"We need to make sure that when people hire Hispanic contractors, they know that not only are the business owners the best, but they have the best staff that's out there today," said Peter Fontanes of Hispanics in Real Estate and Construction.

"In a city like New York we do a lot of business with the private sector -- $17 billion last year," said City Comptroller John Liu. "And unfortunately, not enough of that goes to minority and women entrepreneurs, only a little more than 2 percent. That has to change."

The program was announced during the BuildingsNY Expo at Manhattan's Javits Center.
